About
Founded in 2023, Fuelgae is a government headquartered in Vienna, Austria specializing in Biogas, Biomass, Hydrogen.
Fuelgae is a European collaborative research project coordinated by RTDS Association and comprising 13 multidisciplinary partners from 6 European countries. The project aims to develop and validate novel microalgae-based technologies for CO2 capture and conversion into advanced liquid biofuels. The approach combines specialized microalgae strains, innovative biomass treatment processes, and multifunctional catalytic systems to produce sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. The project validates pilot photobioreactor plants integrated into existing industrial infrastructure across Greece, Romania, and Spain, targeting Technology Readiness Level 5. Key innovations include microalgae selection for lipid and carbohydrate production, hydrothermal liquefaction, enzymatic hydrolysis, catalytic hydrogenation, and a digital twin for process optimization. The project addresses decarbonization of transport sectors difficult to electrify, including aviation and heavy vehicles, while promoting circular economy principles through biochar production and biorefinery residue valorization.
