The Global Bioenergy Partnership was established to implement G8 commitments from the 2005 Gleneagles Plan of Action to support biomass and biofuels deployment. Operating from FAO Headquarters in Rome, GBEP functions as a multi-stakeholder platform comprising 23 member countries and 14 international organizations, with 28 additional observer countries. The partnership develops and disseminates sustainability indicators, greenhouse gas lifecycle analysis methodologies, and capacity-building programs for sustainable bioenergy production and use. Key activities include the development of the GBEP Sustainability Indicators (24 science-based indicators), a Common Methodological Framework for GHG Lifecycle Analysis, bioenergy mapping initiatives, and regional strategy development. GBEP received renewed mandate from the G8 (2006-2013) and recognition from the G20 (2013-2016).
