The concept converts hydrocarbon process gases (refinery gas, cracker gas) into low-carbon hydrogen using proven technology. The hydrogen is then used directly in existing industrial furnaces for high-temperature heat generation, with CO2 captured during the conversion process stored in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea. The project aims to deliver substantial CO2 reductions for refineries and chemical plants without consuming limited renewable electricity or burdening the grid. It is supported by Rotterdam municipality, South Holland province, the Dutch national government, and the European Commission, and benefits from the Dutch SDE subsidy scheme for hydrogen production from process gases for industrial heat.
