UNITED (Multi-Use offshore platforms demonstrators for boosting cost-effective and Eco-friendly production in sustainable marine activities) is a European research project co-financed by the Horizon 2020 programme, running from 2020 to 2023. It demonstrates the viability of ocean multi-use—the intentional shared use of marine resources by multiple maritime activities in close geographic proximity. The project operates five real-world demonstration pilots across three European seas (North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean), combining renewable energy generation (offshore wind farms, floating solar) with aquaculture (seaweed cultivation, oyster restoration, mussel farming) and tourism. The pilots advance technology from TRL5 to TRL7, addressing technical, regulatory, economic, social, and environmental requirements. UNITED develops business models to reduce operational costs, improves health and safety standards for offshore operations, enhances skills for blue economy workers, and provides roadmaps for scaling ocean multi-use solutions globally.
