Founded in 2023, HighMag is a ngo specializing in Energy Storage.

HighMag is a four-year European research initiative funded by the EU's Horizon Europe programme and backed by CINEA. The project brings together 13 academic and industrial partners from Europe, Switzerland, and Israel to develop Generation 5 rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs). The focus is on two novel battery chemistries: magnesium-sulphur batteries with conversion cathodes and magnesium metal batteries with insertion cathodes. Magnesium offers inherent advantages over lithium, including greater abundance, lower cost, enhanced safety, and reduced reliance on critical raw materials. The project systematically addresses material development, electrochemistry, characterization, manufacturing scalability, sustainability assessment, and commercialization pathways. HighMag emphasizes Safe and Sustainable by Design principles, compatibility with existing lithium-ion production infrastructure, and circular economy principles including recyclability and material recovery.
