About
Founded in 2022, HOCLOOP is a ngo specializing in Geothermal.
HOCLOOP is a Horizon Europe-funded research and innovation project (grant agreement No 101083558) led by a consortium of 10 partners from France, Italy, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Poland, and Norway. The project develops a novel horizontal closed-loop geothermal solution designed to extract heat from deep or shallow formation rocks, overcoming the limitations of conventional geothermal technology that depends on finding hot permeable aquifers. The innovation employs advanced drilling technology, extended reach horizontal drilling, and alternative circulation fluids (such as CO2-based fluids) to improve efficiency and reduce the levelized cost of energy. The solution has been tested at full-scale at NORCE's Ullrigg Test Centre in Norway, demonstrating stable and predictable heat extraction in low-permeability environments. HOCLOOP aims to enable geothermal energy exploitation in new regions, improve grid stability when integrated with other renewables, and address environmental concerns including emissions, seismicity, and sustainability. The project encompasses research, development, validation of modeling tools, feasibility studies at multiple pilot sites, environmental assessments, and social acceptance studies.
