The ENLIGHTENED project is a European Union-funded research initiative focused on developing and demonstrating organic photovoltaic (OPV)-based light energy harvesting technology for IoT applications. The project addresses the sustainability challenge of powering an estimated 30 billion IoT devices by 2027, moving away from reliance on primary batteries toward autonomous, light-powered solutions. OPVs offer distinct advantages for this application: they are lightweight, flexible, capable of cost-effective large-area manufacturing, and particularly efficient at converting weak indoor light into electricity. The consortium spans the entire value chain from materials development to end-user applications, including commercial partners focused on retail and asset tracking. Key research areas include stability prediction of OPV devices using machine learning, novel material development, and real-world demonstrator validation. The project has reached its halfway point with a functioning demonstrator and is actively engaging with the broader printed electronics and IoT communities.
