About
Founded in 2023, HySelect is a ngo headquartered in Innsbruck, Austria specializing in Hydrogen, Solar.
HySelect is a multi-disciplinary international research project funded by the European Union and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. The consortium, comprising research institutions and industry partners from Germany, Greece, Finland, Italy, and Austria, demonstrates hydrogen production using concentrated solar technologies. The hybrid sulphur cycle combines high-temperature thermochemical decomposition of sulphuric acid with low-temperature SO2-depolarized electrolysis (SDE). Solar radiation is concentrated onto a centrifugal particle receiver mounted on a solar tower, heating ceramic particles to 900-1000°C. These particles transfer thermal energy to decompose sulphuric acid into water, sulphur trioxide, and oxygen. The resulting sulphur dioxide is then used in the innovative SDE, which requires only 0.17V theoretical cell potential compared to 1.23V for conventional water electrolysis, reducing electrical energy requirements by 25-60%. The project operates demonstration facilities at the Jülich DLR solar tower facility and the Grillo chemical plant in Duisburg. Implementation began in 2023 with completion planned for end of 2026. The consortium received the hy-fcell Award 2025 in the Research & Development category.
