About
I-ups is a renewable energy company specializing in Energy Storage, Other.
I-ups is a collaborative Horizon Europe project aimed at developing and validating a cost-effective, modular high-temperature industrial heat pump (HTHP) based on Stirling engine technology, integrated with thermal energy storage. The system uses inert, non-toxic working fluids with zero GWP and ODP, capable of delivering decarbonized industrial heat up to 400°C from renewable electricity. The project focuses on optimizing key components including compact heat exchangers, static and dynamic sealing solutions, and advanced manufacturing techniques. By coupling the HTHP with molten salts-based thermal energy storage, the system provides on-demand industrial heat with improved grid flexibility and waste heat recovery capabilities. The consortium includes KYOTO Group AS, ENERIN, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, RPOW, and UNIGE, targeting a levelized cost of heat around 25 €/MWh. The project aims to progress the technology to TRL 5 and position Europe as a leader in industrial heat pump solutions for decarbonizing energy-intensive industries.
