Lightcell Energy is developing a novel engine concept that converts light energy directly to electricity. The system uses hot sodium as a monochromatic light source (589 nm, 2.1 eV photons) surrounded by hot mirrors that reflect infrared radiation while transmitting visible light. Tuned photovoltaic cells absorb the monochromatic photons to generate electricity. The design incorporates a 3D-printed ceramic counterflow heat exchanger that recovers 90% of exhaust heat, and an optical labyrinth structure that reduces light losses by over 20-fold. The engine is designed to burn hydrogen or synthetic net-zero-carbon fuels, with a target module size of 10 kW and 4 liters, achieving power density of 5 kW/kg. Target efficiency is 40% wire-to-wire.
