MAKING-CITY is a 72-month Horizon 2020 project (launched December 2018) coordinating the development and validation of Positive Energy District (PED) concepts across Europe. The project brings together 34 partners including 9 city councils, 5 universities, 4 research centres, 4 SMEs, 3 energy companies, and a construction firm. Two Lighthouse Cities (Groningen and Oulu) test the PED model; six Follower Cities (Bassano del Grappa, Kadiköy, León, Lublin, Trenčín, Vidin) replicate the approach. Key interventions include retrofitting residential buildings, implementing district heating with heat pumps, solar thermal panels, geothermal systems, hydro generation, and thermal energy storage. The project aims to create approximately 14,500 jobs through replication in at least 20 additional European cities.
