Founded in 2022, Metharen is a renewable energy company specializing in Biogas, Hydrogen, Energy Storage.

Metharen is an Horizon Europe-funded innovation action project (2022-2027) developing an integrated and optimized biomethane production system with strong market uptake and upscaling potential. The project demonstrates innovative technologies for converting biowaste and discarded residues into biomethane while recovering biogenic CO2. The pilot site is located at ACEA Pinerolese Industriale in Turin, Italy, an integrated waste treatment facility combining biogas production, composting, landfill, and wastewater treatment. The system aims to increase biomethane production capacity by 150% while reducing overall production costs by 20%, achieve a carbon conversion rate exceeding 80%, and reduce GHG emissions by 50% compared to current processes. Key innovations include gasification plant integration, methanation technology, heat recovery, power integration, and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) for enhanced hydrogen production. The project addresses EU climate targets by enabling renewable energy sources intermittency management and supporting domestic biomethane supply as a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels.
