Methasol is a Horizon 2020-funded research and innovation project (July 2021 - December 2024) aimed at developing a sustainable, cost-effective method for producing methanol through visible light-driven CO2 reduction. The project combines advanced materials including Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and graphitic Carbon Nitride in Z-scheme systems that mimic natural photosynthesis. The consortium includes 9 organizations from 7 European countries, 4 Chinese organizations, and 1 US organization. The project targets a 5% solar-to-methanol energy conversion efficiency and has developed and tested new photocatalyst materials for CO2-to-fuel conversion. Sustainability assessments indicate the method can be cleaner than conventional methanol production, particularly when catalysts are reused via greener methods.
