The National Geothermal Centre is a not-for-profit organisation established in January 2024 to accelerate the UK's uptake of geothermal heat and power. Supported by Durham University, the Reece Foundation, the Net Zero Technology Centre, and Shift Geothermal, it operates as an independent, collaborative entity serving as the UK's trusted independent geothermal expert. The NGC combines longstanding technical knowledge with real-world project delivery experience, working hands-on with government, industry and communities to support geothermal projects from early feasibility through to operational delivery. The organisation drives policy framework development, represents the full spectrum of UK geothermal potential to decision-makers, and provides expertise and science-based evidence to inform sector solutions. It aims to create a national hub for geothermal knowledge dissemination, coordinate research and development, and develop technical standards for the emerging geothermal sector.
