About
Founded in 2019, OpenAir Collective is a co-op specializing in Other.
OpenAir Collective is an entirely volunteer-driven network founded in 2019 to advance carbon dioxide removal (CDR) at scale. Operating without full-time staff, investors, board, or formal legal structure, the organization coordinates members across two primary mission domains: advocacy for CDR-supportive policies at local, state, and federal levels; and research & development of CDR technologies including direct air capture, biochar, mineralization, and ocean-based solutions. The collective emphasizes permanence, verifiability, equity, and co-benefits as standards for evaluating CDR approaches. Key initiatives include the annual OpenAir Carbon Removal Challenge, a global student innovation competition; legislative campaigns supporting CDR market development bills; and open-source technology projects like Epiphyte (DIY direct air capture). Members participate through Discord-based collaboration, weekly mission meetups, and webinar series. The organization prioritizes radical openness, diversity, and creative speed to develop CDR solutions and deployment models that formal institutions may not pursue.
