Photo2Fuel is a 3-year Horizon Europe research project launched in September 2022 that develops breakthrough technology for converting captured CO2 into useful fuels and chemicals through artificial photosynthesis. The system uses hybrid microorganism-organic semiconductor systems (Methanosarcina barkeri for methane production and Moorella thermoacetica for acetic acid production) powered solely by solar energy and special LEDs. The project aims to create off-grid solar mini-plants capable of operating under variable atmospheric conditions and different sunlight intensities. The consortium includes 5 universities, 2 research and technology organizations, and 1 SME from 6 countries, collectively advancing sustainable biofuel production to support Europe's climate neutrality goals by 2050.
