Phy2Climate is an EU Horizon 2020 funded research and innovation project that bridges phytoremediation of contaminated sites with production of clean drop-in biofuels. The project operates five phytoremediation pilot sites across Europe, implementing energy crop cultivation on contaminated lands to simultaneously remediate soil and generate feedstock for biofuel production. A pilot-scale biorefinery processes harvested energy crops into drop-in biofuels and bio-coke. The project encompasses technological development, sustainability assessment, legal framework development, and business model creation. Lead participants include Fraunhofer Umsicht, Silesian University of Technology, Hasselt University, LEITAT, ETA Florence, and ITS.
