About

Push-it-thermalstorage is a ngo headquartered in Delft, Netherlands specializing in Geothermal, Energy Storage.

PUSH-IT (Piloting Underground Storage of Heat In geoThermal reservoirs) is a collaborative research project funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe program under grant agreement No 101096566. The consortium comprises universities, research organizations, and companies working to demonstrate full-scale implementation of high-temperature heat storage in geothermal reservoirs. The project addresses the critical challenge of seasonal mismatch between renewable heat generation and heating demand by piloting three distinct underground thermal energy storage technologies: mine thermal energy storage (MTES), borehole thermal energy storage (BTES), and aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES). These systems store heat from sustainable sources—including waste heat from industrial processes, solar thermal, and geothermal—for later use during peak heating periods, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The project operates across six demonstration and follower sites in Europe, with demo sites in Delft (Netherlands), Darmstadt, and Bochum (Germany), and follower sites in Berlin (Germany), Litoměřice (Czech Republic), and United Downs (UK). Beyond technology development, PUSH-IT addresses enabling technologies, societal engagement, governance, policy frameworks, and business models to facilitate widespread adoption. The project emphasizes open science principles, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory harmonization to accelerate market uptake of underground thermal energy storage across Europe.
