About
Founded in 2023, Pysolo is a ngo headquartered in Milan, Italy specializing in Solar, Biomass.
Pysolo is a Horizon Europe research initiative launched in July 2023, coordinated by Politecnico di Milano. The project develops an innovative, fully renewable process that integrates concentrated solar power with biomass pyrolysis technology. By using solar-generated heat instead of burning pyrolysis products, Pysolo maximizes production of high-value outputs (bio-oil, biochar, pyrogas) while reducing CO2 emissions. The technology operates flexibly: during sunny hours powered by CSP, with pyrolysis gas combustion as backup when solar heat is insufficient. The system can also support grid balancing by converting pyrogas to electricity or using surplus renewable grid energy. Key consortium members include Politecnico di Milano (coordinator), Politecnico di Torino, German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institut de Carboquímica (CSIC), Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC), French National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks (INERIS), nova-Institut GmbH, RE-CORD, and EUCORE. The project aims to prepare ground for industrial deployment through techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and scale-up studies targeting Southern European refineries.
