Queensboro Renewable Express is a major transmission infrastructure project developed by Rise Light & Power and its subsidiary Queensboro Development, LLC. The project consists of two separate underwater High Voltage Direct Current transmission circuits and onshore facilities designed to bring offshore wind energy to New York City. The cables will traverse the Upper and Lower New York Bays and the East River, with a total underwater route of approximately 18.5 miles in New York waters. The project is designed to deliver approximately 2.62 gigawatts of clean energy to power over 2 million households. All underwater cables will be installed below the seafloor in discrete trenches, minimizing environmental and cultural impacts. Onshore infrastructure, including two converter stations, a substation, and operations and maintenance facilities, will be located at the Ravenswood Generating Station site in Long Island City, Queens. The project received an Article VII application submission in December 2022, with the New York State Department of Public Service deeming the application complete in May 2024. Public information forums and statement hearings were scheduled for July 23, 2024. The project is part of the broader Renewable Ravenswood initiative to transform the site into a clean energy hub.
