REFEST is a European research and innovation project focused on retrofitting traditional small fishing vessels with low-cost, easily deployable technologies to achieve significant reductions in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The project aims to develop methods and tools supporting the shipbuilding, ship-repair, and fishing industries. The consortium comprises 14 academic and industrial partners across 10 countries (Italy, Spain, Turkey, Lithuania, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Poland) in the Mediterranean, North, and Baltic Sea regions. Key innovations include hydrodynamic hull improvements, electrical power management systems, alternative propellers, solar photovoltaic panels, spray rails, air lubrication systems, and cloud-based eco-driving software with AI and dynamic positioning capabilities. The project targets a 40% reduction in fuel consumption and emissions compared to original vessel designs while maintaining low capital and operational expenditure for rapid payback times.
