About
Sludge2Fuel is a renewable energy company headquartered in Fredericia, Denmark specializing in Hydrogen, Biomass, Energy Storage.
Sludge2Fuel is a comprehensive demonstration project validating full-scale hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of wet wastewater sludge to produce sustainable fuels and fertilizer. The project spans the complete value chain from wastewater sludge processing to refined fuel production. A modular HTL plant, designed to treat 4,000 tonnes of dry matter annually, is integrated at Fredericia Spildevand & Energi (Denmark's largest public industrial treatment plant). The biocrude produced contains 7-8 times the energy consumed in production and has 80% reduced carbon intensity compared to fossil fuels. The biocrude is refined at Crossbridge Energy A/S refinery using green hydrogen to produce drop-in transportation fuels. The project consortium includes Circlia Nordic (HTL technology developer), Krüger (integration and wastewater expertise), Aarhus University (research leadership), Crossbridge Energy (refinery operations), and Fredericia Spildevand & Energi (demonstration host). Funded by Denmark's Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP) from 2021-2024, the project aims to commercialize decentralized HTL technology and establish sustainable fuel refineries supporting the EU RED II agreements.
