Smart-energy-austria facilitates renewable energy communities (Erneuerbare Energiegemeinschaften - EEGs) and citizen energy communities (Bürgerenergiegemeinschaften - BEGs) in the Osttirol and Oberkärnten regions. The platform comprises seven independent EEG associations and one BEG. Members generate, store, consume, and share renewable energy—primarily solar—within their local grid areas, reducing costs and improving energy independence. The platform provides smart metering services, billing management, grid proximity checks (Nahbereichsabfrage), and registration support. EEGs are limited to renewable sources within a single grid operator's concession area, while BEGs can include multiple grid areas and larger participants without control authority. The cooperative model prioritizes community energy management over profit.
