About

Founded in 2016, SmartEnCity is a government headquartered in Sønderborg, Denmark specializing in Solar, Biogas, Energy Storage.

SmartEnCity is a collaborative EU project involving three cities: Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), Tartu (Estonia), and Sønderborg (Denmark). The Sønderborg component, launched February 2016 with a 66-month duration, focuses on achieving CO₂ neutrality by 2029. Key initiatives include: energy renovation of 45 residential buildings (844 apartments, 66,000 m²) operated by three housing associations (SAB, SøBo, B42), featuring solar panels, LED lighting, energy-efficient windows and doors, and wall/roof insulation; replacement of 39 diesel buses with biomethane-powered vehicles (reducing CO₂ emissions from ~2,700 tonnes annually to zero); installation of intelligent charging infrastructure; and development of an IT platform for data collection, monitoring, and knowledge-sharing across European cities. Total EU funding: approximately 208 million DKK, of which 50 million DKK allocated to Sønderborg.
