Founded in 2009 and based in the Netherlands, the Olivine Foundation operates under the brand name Smartstones. The organization focuses on promoting the natural mineral olivine as a solution for carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere. Olivine, the most abundant silicate mineral in Earth's crust, binds CO2 through an accelerated weathering process. The Foundation conducts research, develops pilot projects, and advocates for large-scale implementation of olivine applications across multiple sectors including agriculture, road pavement, coastal environments, and industrial processes. The work builds on pioneering research by Professor Olaf Schuiling and is supported by field trials conducted by research organizations such as Deltares. Applications include enhanced rock weathering on croplands with co-benefits for soil security and food production, olivine-enriched asphalt for road construction, and coastal carbon capture initiatives.
