Steesmat is a 42-month Horizon Europe Innovation Action project led by a consortium of 13 European partners from Norway, Germany, Finland, France, and the Czech Republic. The project develops and demonstrates a modular, scalable, onboard direct current (DC) power system architecture tailored to large vessels. Core components include a Medium Voltage Direct Current grid with solid-state transformers, intelligent onboard energy management systems, and modular power electronic components designed to improve efficiency and enable integration of batteries and fuel cells. The system will be validated at Sustainable Energy's Energy House facilities in Norway and later demonstrated aboard the RV North Star. Steesmat addresses decarbonization of maritime transport by providing a power architecture fit for renewable energy integration and zero-emission vessel operation.
