Sunchem is an agro-technology company specializing in the development and commercialization of Solaris, a high-yield, nicotine-free tobacco variety bred by Italian professor Corrado Fogher. Founded in 2007, the company operates globally with offices in the Netherlands, Italy, South Africa, and Brazil. Solaris seeds contain approximately 38% oil with composition comparable to sunflower oil, and the plant produces up to 5000 seeds per seedpod. The company applies biorefinery principles to extract multiple value streams: seed oil for biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (biojet), protein-rich seedcake for animal feed, and leaf protein extraction for human nutrition. Sunchem's South African operations achieved certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials and contributed to Africa's first biofuel flight in 2016 through Project Solaris, a partnership with Boeing, South African Airways, and SkyNRG. The company also develops SL632, a GMO cultivar for molecular farming and plant-made pharmaceuticals production. Sunchem holds industrial patents for tobacco use as an energy, feed, and food source in over 100 countries.
