SYRIUS
SYRIUS - Hydrogen for sustainable steel
Terni, Italy
About
Founded in 2025, SYRIUS is a ngo headquartered in Terni, Italy specializing in Hydrogen.
SYRIUS is a 54-month collaborative research project coordinated by EU CORE Consulting and Politecnico di Milano, funded by the European Commission under the Clean Hydrogen Partnership (Grant Agreement 101192534). The consortium comprises 10 beneficiaries and 2 affiliated entities across 6 EU Member States (Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Estonia, Finland): 2 universities, 1 research institute, 3 SMEs, and 6 large companies. The project demonstrates integration of a 4.2 MWel Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) producing 100 kg/h of green hydrogen into an electric arc furnace steel mill at Acciai Speciali Terni. The system integrates with a fuel-flexible reheating furnace, hydrogen storage, solar PV plants, and an advanced Energy Management System. Expected to reduce steel reheating CO2 emissions by 5,600 tonnes annually during project execution, with potential to exceed 11 Mt per year upon technology scale-up across global steel industry. Key innovations include waste heat recovery via steam generation and oxygen recovery from the furnace.
