The Green Building is a landmark sustainable building project completed in Fall 2008 in Louisville's NuLu neighborhood. The owners, Gill and Augusta Holland, transformed a former dry goods store into Louisville's first commercial LEED Platinum-certified building and Kentucky's first Platinum Adaptive Reuse Project. The renovation retained the original 119-year-old masonry structure while incorporating modern sustainable features including a 40-foot-high lobby, extensive natural lighting, solar power systems, geothermal wells, and recycled denim insulation. The building achieved 73% energy self-sufficiency and functions as a local food center, sustainability hub, creative public space, and startup incubator. It has been recognized with multiple environmental awards and featured in national publications as a model for green retrofitting.
