TheStorage

TheStorage uses a patent-pending sand battery technology that stores thermal energy. Ordinary sand is heated to temperatures over 1000°C using renewable electricity or grid power during low-price periods. The hot sand is stored in a specially designed silo, and when heat is needed, the sand flows through a proprietary heat exchanger to transfer heat to various working media such as steam, thermal oil, hot water, or hot air.

TheStorage enables industries to reduce energy costs by up to 70% by utilizing renewable electricity when it's abundant and inexpensive, storing it as heat, and releasing it when needed. This eliminates reliance on costly oil, gas, or direct electricity for industrial heat processes. Additionally, companies can generate revenue through grid balancing services.

TheStorage can provide various heat outputs: hot water (50-200°C), steam (50-500°C), hot oil (up to 280°C), and hot air (80-800°C). The system can reach storage temperatures over 1000°C, making it suitable for diverse industrial applications.

TheStorage serves industries requiring process heat, including food and beverage, manufacturing, chemical processing, and any sector currently using fossil fuels for heat production. The technology is particularly valuable for industries looking to decarbonize while maintaining reliable heat supply.

TheStorage systems are highly customizable. Customers can select their needed charging power (1-20 MW), discharging power (1-20 MW), and storage capacity (20-500 MWh) based on their specific process requirements and energy profile. The system allows simultaneous charging and discharging and provides maximum heat power at all times.

TheStorage uses dynamic sand flow technology that is 10 times more effective in heat transfer than static storage solutions. The system uses ordinary sand as the storage medium, has no piping or heat transfer components in the storage silo, offers easy access for maintenance, and can be scaled up with increasing benefits. The technology combines proven components in an innovative way to provide 100% heat power availability.

TheStorage enables companies to achieve significant greenhouse gas emission reductions by replacing fossil fuels with renewable electricity in their heat production. This helps meet regulatory requirements, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments, and corporate sustainability goals while simultaneously lowering long-term energy costs.

TheStorage completed construction of its pilot plant in Finland in 2025. The company successfully tested heating unit prototypes, surpassing the target temperature of 800°C. The pilot plant includes a full steam system and produces steam for industrial use. TheStorage secured €2.15 million in funding from 2C Ventures, Superhero Capital, and Business Finland, and is testing its solution with customers.

TheStorage (Buffer Solutions Oy) is headquartered in Tampere, Finland, at Åkerlundinkatu 8, 33100 Tampere. The company was founded in 2023 by a team of boiler technology veterans with extensive experience in steam and heat transfer.
