TRIATHLON is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action programme coordinated by Stichting Materials Innovation Institute and Delft University of Technology. The project develops disruptive technologies for robust, low-maintenance, low-emission hydrogen-electric powertrains for megawatt-class aircraft. Key objectives include reducing NOx emissions through hydrogen injection strategies, eliminating cryogenic pump requirements via high-pressure storage buffers, improving powertrain gravimetric index with effective heatsinks, and reducing hydrogen conditioning power through innovative thermal management. Work spans six work packages across 48 months, with expected outcomes including net-zero aircraft propulsion systems deployable by 2035-2050.
