About
Founded in 2020, UNLOCK Project is a ngo specializing in Biomass, Biogas.
UNLOCK is a Horizon 2020 research and innovation project funded by the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking. It addresses the valorization of the European poultry sector's 3.6 million tonnes of annual feather waste, of which only 25% is currently collected and utilized. The project designs an economically and environmentally sustainable value chain converting feathers (which contain nearly 90% keratin) into innovative bio-based materials for agricultural applications. UNLOCK employs four technical conversion processes—steam explosion, enzymatic digestion, chemical hydrolysis, and mechanical fragmentation—to produce end-products with controlled biodegradability properties. The consortium comprises 15 partners from 7 EU countries covering the entire value chain. The project demonstrates 20% CO2 emission reduction and establishes regional bioeconomy clusters in Poland, France, and Spain to support post-project replicability.
