Village Solaire Essaouira is a rural electrification project established in 2017 in the village of Idmjahdi near Essaouira, Morocco. Recognized as Africa's first solar village, the project is entirely powered by photovoltaic energy and functions as a third-place (tiers-lieu) that preserves traditional Moroccan knowledge and crafts. The initiative valorizes the argan tree through a dedicated Maison de l'Argan, supports women entrepreneurs in argan transformation and artisanal product sales, operates a restaurant, and maintains a nursery and botanical gardens. The project has expanded from 20 to 300 participating families in six years and includes educational programs, heritage tourism, and agricultural cooperatives. Partnership arrangements involve Le Petit Olivier, Intermarché, the Mohamed VI Foundation for Argan Research and Preservation, and local organizations including Essaouira Mogador and AgriMogador cooperative.
