WHISPER (Wind and Solar Energy for maritime transition) is a collaborative research and innovation project coordinated by Verkís and comprising 13 partners from 6 European countries. The project develops integrated retrofit solutions combining flexible solar panels, vertical-axis wind turbines, and tilting wing sail systems to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions from long-distance maritime transport. The consortium includes technology developers (OceanWings, SideWind, Solbian), engineering firms (Stirling Design International, Verkís), shipping operators (Samskip), materials specialists (CANOE), classification societies (Lloyds Register), and supporting services. Funded under EU Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement 101096577) and UK Research and Innovation, the project targets demonstrating approximately 30% fuel savings on retrofitted bulk carriers and up to 15% on retrofitted containerships.
