Windduschen is an initiative that allows residential customers to utilize surplus renewable wind energy that would otherwise be curtailed due to grid congestion. The system uses simple heating elements (Heizstäbe) installed in existing hot water storage tanks. When transmission operators forecast grid congestion, they request flexible electricity consumption, and Windduschen-equipped systems automatically activate to consume the excess renewable power. The electricity is priced below natural gas rates under Germany's new 'Nutzen statt Abregeln' (Use Instead of Curtail) regulation that took effect October 2024. The system is centrally controlled by decarbon1ze (the responsible operator) based on grid requirements and includes temperature sensors to prevent overheating. Households can monitor consumption and CO2 savings via a dedicated app. Prokon eG supplies the electricity for the heating elements.
