About

Founded in 2008, Asociación Manos Abiertas is a community organisation based in Ciudad Vieja, Guatemala working on health, gender equality, human rights +1 more.

Asociación Manos Abiertas (AMA) is a community organisation based in Ciudad Vieja, near Antigua Guatemala, founded in 2008. It is led by women and works to strengthen autonomous midwifery and defend sexual and reproductive rights. AMA provides integral midwifery care and sexual and reproductive health services, including prenatal and gynaecological care, natural childbirth, family planning, cervical cancer screening and menopause support, at its clinic and through mobile clinics in rural communities. It also runs community education workshops on sexual and reproductive rights and self-care, works on reproductive justice advocacy and research, and offers internships for midwives and nurses. Services are aimed at women in Guatemala, especially those in vulnerable conditions. Patients make small, sliding-scale contributions so that no one is turned away for economic reasons. Its work is funded by foundations and individual donors, and its budget has grown since 2022 under a strategic plan running to 2030.
