Asociatia umanitara Speranta pentru Romania (SPRO) is a Romanian humanitarian association founded in autumn 2009, after its humanitarian activity began in 2007 in the Oravita area of Caras-Severin county, when it provided hot meals and food parcels to poor, elderly people at home. It runs fundraising campaigns, mainly through its online donation platform sufardeleucemie.ro and SMS donations, to cover medical treatment, surgery, medicines and daily living costs for children with cancer and leukaemia and for other people in need, including elderly people living on the street, street children, poor families with many children, single mothers and orphans. The association also raises funds for school supplies, food and firewood, and runs a bread-donation campaign. It accepts donations from individuals, companies (through sponsorship contracts) and taxpayers who redirect 3.5% of personal income tax or 20% of corporate profit tax. Its stated practice includes publishing donor lists, providing written and video reports to donors, verifying cases through home visits, and keeping a working capital fund to pay urgent treatment costs in advance.
