About

Founded in 1990, Cinterandes is a non-governmental organisation based in Cuenca, Ecuador working on health, community development.

Cinterandes, also known as the Cinterandes Foundation, is a non-profit organisation founded in 1990 in Cuenca, Ecuador. It aims to provide free, high-quality surgical care to low-income people in remote and underserved areas of Ecuador. Its core activity is a Mobile Surgery programme, begun in 1994, which uses an operating room built into a truck to carry out surgery in the Andes, the coast, the Amazon and urban slums, with care delivered close to patients' homes and families. The foundation also runs family health programmes covering nutrition, maternal and child care and vaccination, and hosts a teaching programme that gives foreign medical students clinical experience in developing-country settings. It is supported by a volunteer medical team, individual and institutional donations, and student programme fees. The foundation was established in honour of Dr. Edgar Rodas Andrade, its founder, who was a former Minister of Health of Ecuador.
