About

The European Glaucoma Society (EGS) is a not-for-profit scientific organisation based in Zug, Switzerland, that advocates for the highest standards of glaucoma care across Europe. It was founded in 1978 by Jules François, Wolfgang Leydhecker and Erik Greve. Its vision is to promote the well-being of people with glaucoma and minimise glaucoma-induced visual disability within an affordable healthcare system. The society develops evidence-based guidelines, including the 6th edition of its Guidelines, and publishes guidance on novel glaucoma surgical devices in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. It runs a fellowship programme through certified training centres, a mentorship programme for emerging leaders, and examinations with the EBO for glaucoma subspecialty recognition. Its Patient Involvement Initiative, made up of people living with glaucoma, represents the patient perspective. The EGS also organises an annual congress and courses, and provides educational material such as guidelines, videos and podcasts, largely free to members. Membership carries no fee.
