Fundación Democracia y Gobierno Local is a non-profit technical foundation, established in May 2002, that works to strengthen local government in Spain. It promotes and defends the interests of local governments, notably provincial deputations, island councils and insular councils. Its activities include organising the Conferencia de Presidencias de Diputaciones, Cabildos y Consejos Insulares, publishing studies and legal analysis, running a research and innovation programme with academic and public-administration experts, running the Acento Local blog on local legal topics, and holding training sessions and courses, including collaboration with master's programmes. The foundation also collaborates with similar organisations in Europe and Latin America and aims to be an international reference centre. Its statutes state that its aim is to contribute to better local government functioning and democratic legitimacy, for the benefit of citizens.
