GİMDES is a Turkish civil society association founded in 2005 that researches, sets standards for, audits and certifies halal and wholesome products, including food, cosmetics, medicines and cleaning products. It aims to give consumers trustworthy halal products and to give manufacturers internationally recognised halal certification. The association runs awareness activities on food additives and halal consumption, organises halal food symposia and conferences, publishes books and a magazine, and states that it is an independent organisation that reinvests its earnings. It is based in Istanbul and holds accreditations and recognitions from several national halal authorities, and it presides over the World Halal Council, a network of halal certification bodies. Its certification scheme is open to manufacturers that voluntarily apply, with most of its certified firms exporting from Turkey.
