Karenni National Women's Organization (KNWO) is a non-profit, community-based organisation founded in 1993 by Karenni women who fled to Thailand seeking asylum from military repression in Myanmar. It works to advance women's rights, protection, empowerment, and livelihoods, and to end violence against women and girls. KNWO serves women and girls in refugee camps along the Thai-Myanmar border and in Karenni State, including over 1,000 women members and more than 5,000 families in two refugee camps. Its work includes a safe house for survivors of gender-based violence in Loikaw, programmes on protection, early childhood development, humanitarian response, advocacy and documentation, and livelihoods, and training for staff in programme management, participatory research, and advocacy. KNWO has offices in Mae Hong Son, Thailand, and Loikaw Township, Karenni State, Myanmar, and has around 280 staff, most of whom work in the refugee camps.
