La Puerta Abierta is a learning center in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, focused on meaningful education and literacy outreach for students of all ages. It began in 2007 as a small library in one room and has grown into a community school with preschool, elementary and kindergarten classes, art, music, English and physical education. Its programmes include the Traveling Library, reading circles and parenting workshops, and it aims to develop children and families into creative problem solvers and community leaders. The organisation is funded entirely by donations from individuals and groups, with US donations routed through The Sparks Foundation. It recruits volunteers and collaborators and welcomes book donations.
