Matchbox is a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa, with a German association, MATCHBOX e.V. It works to improve the quality of life and learning for young children in under-resourced township communities. Matchbox upgrades daycare centres in townships such as Mfuleni by converting shipping containers into kitchen and sanitary units, improving hygiene, cooking and play conditions. Alongside the physical upgrades, it supports care givers through early childhood development training, management and bookkeeping courses, and offers health and educational support. Projects are developed together with care givers, parents and neighbours, and the organisation works with local partners and the City of Cape Town. Donations fund the upgrades, and the German association issues donation certificates for tax deduction.
