Medborgarskolan is a Swedish study association (studieförbund) within folkbildning, the Swedish tradition of popular adult education. It is a non-profit association that offers courses, study circles, lectures, vocational and diploma training, and schools across Sweden, with activities at more than 100 locations and head office in Uppsala. Its course range covers languages (courses in around 35 languages, including Swedish for speakers of other languages and sign language), music, arts and crafts, dance and theatre, communication and digital skills, nature and animal husbandry, economics and society, and health. Courses are taught by course leaders, many of whom have the taught language as their mother tongue, and can be taken in classrooms, online in real time, or in blended formats. The association also runs preschools, primary and secondary schools, and a public-facing prize for democracy, and it carries out labour-market projects on commission from public bodies. Participation is voluntary and open to all, with fees paid by participants alongside public funding.
