Schizofreniförbundet
Stockholm, Sweden
About
Founded in 1987, Schizofreniförbundet is a non-profit association based in Stockholm, Sweden working on mental health, disability.
Schizofreniförbundet is a Swedish national disability and interest organisation for people with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, their relatives, and other interested people. It works to increase knowledge about schizophrenia and the functional impairments the illness can cause, and to combat stigma, prejudice and lack of understanding. The organisation provides support to relatives, including a support line and advice for members from a psychologist and a lawyer. It operates through local associations, reportedly around 70 locations across Sweden, which run support groups, meetings, leisure activities, and in some cases housing and daytime activity projects for people with psychiatric disabilities. The federation also acts as an advocacy voice toward government, parliament and central authorities, participates in public inquiries as an expert and referral body, and promotes research into schizophrenia. It publishes the member magazine Empati and books on the illness, and is a member of World Fellowship for Schizophrenia and Allied Disorders (WFSAD) and the European Federation of Associations of Families of People with Mental Illness (EUFAMI). Membership numbers are stated inconsistently across the site. Founded in 1987, the organisation is independent of political parties and religion.
