Schoggitaler
Zürich, Switzerland
About
Founded in 1946, Schoggitaler is a non-profit organisation based in Zürich, Switzerland working on nature & wildlife conservation, heritage, community development.
The Schoggitaler is a annual fundraising and education campaign run jointly by the Swiss non-profit organisations Schweizer Heimatschutz and Pro Natura. Since 1946, schoolchildren have sold gold chocolate talers, made from Swiss organic milk and fair trade cocoa, across Switzerland each September. Each year's proceeds support a main theme project for nature or heritage protection, with the other proceeds funding wider work by both organisations, such as protecting landscapes, historic buildings and village squares, creating amphibian habitats and securing wildlife corridors. Participating school classes receive free teaching materials on the annual theme and keep 50 Rappen per taler for their class funds. The talers are produced by Aeschbach Chocolatier in Root LU and packed by the Martin Stiftung in Erlenbach. The campaign is ZEWO-certified and is also offered as gift packs to individuals and companies. Both carrier organisations are non-governmental and non-profit-making, acting for the general public.
