ZERO is a Portuguese non-governmental environmental organisation, non-profit and of public utility, with national scope. It was created in late 2015 by around one hundred people committed to sustainable development. It works to make sustainability the structuring element of national and international public policy, through dialogue with policymakers and companies, cooperation with peer organisations and social pressure. It mobilises society through communication, capacity building and awareness-raising, promoting reduced consumption, renewable energy, the circular economy and social equity. Its five thematic areas cover a broad range of environmental issues, including climate, energy and mobility, biodiversity, pollution, resources and waste, and sustainable economies. Its main focus is changing public policy. It operates independently of political parties, companies, religious bodies and government. Its work includes monitoring the noise and health costs of Lisbon's Humberto Delgado airport.
