About
Founded in 2017, Altris is a private company headquartered in Uppsala, Sweden with approximately 51-200 employees specializing in Energy Storage.
Altris is a Swedish sodium-ion battery company founded in 2017 at Uppsala University, developing and commercializing proprietary Prussian White cathode technology and sodium-ion cells. The company operates a functioning production pilot line in Uppsala producing industrial reference cells and a cathode active material facility in Kolín, Czechia. Altris manufactures sodium-ion cells (E-Series and P-Series) and Prussian White cathode active material (CAM) using abundant European raw materials including iron, salt, wood, and hard carbon from forestry waste. The technology is designed for automotive low-voltage applications, grid and stationary energy storage, data centers, and defence systems. All materials are sourced entirely from Europe with no dependency on cobalt, nickel, lithium, or conflict minerals. The company has secured EIC Accelerator funding and validation partnerships with major industrial manufacturers including Clarios and automotive OEMs.

Frequently asked questions
published by the companyWhat is Prussian White cathode active material?
Prussian White is an iron-sodium compound used as the cathode in sodium-ion batteries. It contains no cobalt, nickel, or manganese, and is produced entirely from European raw materials.
How does Prussian White compare to LFP?
Prussian White delivers comparable energy density to LFP while offering simpler raw material sourcing, lower processing complexity, and full European supply chain security - with substantially lower energy use in production.
Can we license the Prussian White technology?
Yes. Altris offers technology licensing for cell manufacturers wishing to integrate Prussian White into their own production. Contact us to discuss terms.
What makes sodium-ion suitable for grid-scale storage?
Sodium-ion chemistry offers high cycle life, broad temperature operability, and no critical mineral dependency - all essential for long-term stationary storage infrastructure.
Is Altris technology available for residential storage systems?
Currently Altris operates at the cell and material level, supplying industrial partners who integrate cells into complete systems. Contact us to discuss integration pathways with our technology to find a suitable solution.
What is the difference between the E-Series and P-Series?
The E-Series is optimised for long-duration endurance applications with maximum cycle life. The P-Series is optimised for high C-rate applications requiring rapid, repeatable power delivery. Both are built on the same Prussian White cathode active material.
What integration support does Altris provide?
The Gen 1 E-Series has been validated in a 36V 12S1P system with a max discharge current of 225A and a voltage range of 1.8-3.8V per cell. Integration support and BMS guidance are available from our engineering team.
Is the E-Series classified as dangerous goods for shipping?
No. Altris sodium-ion cells are classified as Non-Dangerous Goods (Class 9 Exempt) and can be stored and shipped at 0 volts.
Has the Altris cell been tested for military or defence certification?
Altris cells are validated against industrial test standards including cold-start, cycle life, and abuse tolerance. Certification programmes for specific defence standards are available through our co-development process.
Can cells be stored for long periods without maintenance charging?
Yes. Altris sodium-ion cells can be stored at 0 volts with minimal degradation - a critical capability for defence and emergency readiness applications.
