About
Founded in 2020, ASTEP Project is a ngo headquartered in Madrid, Spain specializing in Solar.
ASTEP (Application of Solar Thermal Energy to Processes) is a 5-year EU-funded Research and Innovation Action under Horizon 2020, coordinated by Professor Antonio Rovira at Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia in Madrid. The project develops innovative solar thermal heating systems for industrial processes, addressing the significant thermal energy demand in industry (approximately 72 TWh per year in the EU). Key innovations include the SunDial rotary Fresnel collector and Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems based on Phase Change Materials. The project validates its concept through two industrial demonstration sites: Mandrekas dairy facility in Greece and ArcelorMittal steel plant in Romania. The solution targets industrial heat demand at temperatures above 150°C and up to 400°C, enabling partial replacement of fossil fuel consumption while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. ASTEP Dashboard provides real-time monitoring and performance analysis of the systems.
